New Work
I make drawings every day. Often I work in series, developing an idea across several drawings. Each work is unique, and fits into the series with its distinct message. Lately I’ve been working between four separate series, adding new works as inspiration hits me. Some drawings in their series are outstanding, for any number of reasons. I show them here first.
Sizes
When a size is given, it includes nearly the whole sheet, with the subject “floating” in a tinted surround. What may seem a generous margin is indeed part of the image, and key to the aesthetic philosophy of my work. For instance, Four D is listed as being “12 x 13 inches”, with the subject being roughly five inches by five inches, and the surround being the full twelve by thirteen inches listed in the credit line.
Images of the Drawings
A silverpoint drawing is difficult to photograph; the drawn surface is reflective, low-contrast, and pale. In my work, there is also a great deal of surround in pale color that must be lighted evenly from edge to edge. To further complicate matters, the drawings are highly detailed, sometimes with lightly embossed surfaces and shimmering differences of metallic tones, and wisps of sketchy marks that indicate the progression of a work from start to finish. These details never show up in photographs, especially web images that are one-tenth the area of the finished drawings. I am always happy to lend a drawing to a professional curator who wants to see one up close.
