This series is a continuation of Almost Words, and explores the use of object grouping
in a single composition. Again, the letters are treated as subjects in a still-life, viewed in three-dimensional space under real lighting conditions.
I am interested in making words, not based on roots or on phoenetics, but on the arrangements of their letters. It's a kind of visual poetry,
the trick being to create a word that is both beautiful to see and pleasant to say, and that makes a sort of sense in the context of its presentation.
Each of these works is in silverpoint on prepared paper. Since the subjects are white plaster letters, I use strokes of
white casein to highlight the bright edge of the objects against the tinted ground. |
